Harry E. Barr, founding partner of Chesser & Barr, was a native of Lexington, KY. Harry earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama, practicing law in both Florida and Alabama. He had a distinguished military career and was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.
Following his military career, the legal profession beckoned him. He once remarked that “trial law was the only thing that seemed interesting and challenging.” And so began a well-respected career in law that lasted more than 50 years.
Always a Southern gentleman, Harry embraced being a strong advocate for his clients. His love of the law was evident by his service to the Okaloosa-Walton Bar Association, the Legal Aid Society, the First Circuit Judicial Nominating Committee, The Florida Bar Board of Bar Examiners, and many other groups. Harry was generous with his legal knowledge and experience; helping new associates learn the ropes, serving as a member of the Board of Directors to several area banks, offering sage advice to those that sought him out.
Harry also knew how to have fun… he loved boating, was a member of the Krewe of Bowlegs since 1974. He served on the Honor Guard in 1982-1983 and was selected Krewe First Mate in 1986-1987. He led the Krewe as Captain Billy Bowlegs the XXXVIII. He even co-owned an original Okaloosa Island fire truck at one point.
Harry’s legacy of service and dedication to the law and to his community continues to shape the culture of the firm he founded. While he is no longer with us, his spirit is reflected in the continued work of his law firm.
