Steps to File a Petition for Stepparent Adoption in Florida
In order to officially begin the adoption process, you must file a Petition for Adoption. You, as the stepparent, are a petitioner along with your spouse. When you file the petition, the parent who is absent in the child’s life has an opportunity to oppose the adoption. If they agree and the court agrees that it is in the best interest of the child, the court will finalize the adoption and the child will receive a new birth certificate.
The petition to initiate the adoption process will ask for the following information:
- The birth date and place of the child you are seeking to adopt
- A statement of how long the stepparent has lived with the child
- Reasons why you wish to adopt the child
