In Remembrance of Harry Barr
This has not been written sooner because it is so difficult for me to write. Harry Barr, my law partner for more than 50 years, passed away over the weekend. My first introduction to my long-time partner was when he and I tried a case on opposite sides in 1975. Harry represented an insurance company with lots of money, and I represented someone who had none. Harry had every reason to act superior because he held all the cards. He did not, then or ever. In trying that case he didn’t give me an inch, but he was never mean or critical. I came to realize that he was just that way—not just with me, but with everyone.
Harry Barr somehow believed we could be law partners despite the fact that he brought everything to the table, and I brought only myself. For 50 years, during which we had many associates, some younger, some smarter, some who made more money, and some who were none of those—through it all, Harry was the rock of this law firm.
Harry Barr was the first lawyer I knew to be a board-certified civil trial lawyer, and he served for years as a member of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. I know of no lawyer or judge who did not respect the gentle nature, wisdom, and experience we all gained from our partner, Mr. Barr.
Harry E. Barr, we will always miss you and you will always be the senior partner in this law firm.
